Soleto is one of the nine towns which make up the area now known as Grecia Salentina.

The municipalities which form the 'Greek' community in Southern Puglia no longer follow the orthodox religious rite but are none the less proud of their linguistic heritage which harks back to the times when the Eastern Roman Empire was ruled from its capital Byzantium.

Soleto

Soleto is a tiny historical town in the Salentine Peninsular which occupies an important place in local history. With ancient Messapic origins, it maintained its importance as the home of the Counts of Soleto and the family of del Balzo Orsini. The highlights of a visit to Soleto include the tiny Chapel of Saint Stephen with its imensely evocative frescoes and the 14th century belltower known as la Guglia.
